Babies are pretty smart…

April 4, 2011

Babies are pretty smart. I had my doubts but Lily amazed me this weekend.

Lily has been going to baby swimming lessons for nearly a month. Basically ‘swimming’ entails you holding on to your baby as you sing them nursery rhymes. It really is more about gaining water confidence. For some reason I thought it would be more like the Nirvana’s Nevermind’s album cover…

So from day 1, we’ve been saying a cue, “Lily, are you ready? 1, 2, 3…” and then you put their body under the water and eventually progress to their head. Every time I say the cue, Lily would be looking around not taking notice of me so I was very skeptical to whether she was understanding anything so didn’t put her head under.

So of course when I was at a friend’s pool, pushy DH wanted to see Lily go under. So I said the cue and saw Lily close her eyes and hold her breath before I put her whole body under the water- and she did it every time too!

I shall not have low expectations every again. Sorry Lily!

She’s so cute! It’s amazing what babies know but we don’t give them credit for seeing they can’t tell us.

I have always been a little unsure of the swimming lessons so young, but I think you have just changed my mind!
    Little smarty pants! Go Lily!
